ABOUT THE CLASSES

Contemporary Forms

Nicole von Arx's advanced-level contemporary class offers a dynamic exploration of movement that merges floorwork, improvisation, and her latest choreographic research. The class begins with a challenging warm-up designed to isolate, strengthen, align, and balance the body, preparing dancers for the physical and emotional effort ahead. Improvisation tasks follow, emphasizing sensation, timing, and spatial awareness, fostering an active investigation of movement mechanics and energetic efficiency. As the flow builds in complexity, dancers delve into biomechanically safe techniques for innovative inversions and full-body engagement. The class culminates in intricate phrase work, where dancers can experience Nicole’s unique movement vocabulary and musicality, combining strategy, strength, and fluidity. This rigorous and rewarding class invites participants to push their boundaries and embrace the full spectrum of dynamic range and artistry.

Partnering

Immerse yourself in NVA & Guests' partnering techniques with excerpts from the company’s 2022 production, Stay With Me. Guided by longtime collaborators, this workshop emphasizes tactile feedback and responsive engagement, offering dancers creative tools to expand their movement vocabulary. Participants will explore innovative ways to share and receive weight, fostering trust and connection through dynamic physicality.

NVA & Guests

Repertoire

Led by current NVA & Guests collaborators, this workshop offers dancers an opportunity to engage deeply with excerpts from the company’s newest work-in-progress, Cry Wolf. Participants will explore dynamic movement and a variety of textures, immersing themselves in the distinctive physical language of the piece.

Building on these elements, dancers will then apply these qualities in the Worldbuilding portion of the day, expanding their creative exploration and connection to the work.

“Worldbuilding” Creative Process

Explore Nicole von Arx's dynamic creative process in NVA & Guests' workshop, Worldbuilding. This immersive experience introduces dancers to key elements of the company’s repertoire, including theatrics and text work, blending movement and storytelling in unique ways.

Participants will have the option to bring a memorized text or work with a provided short text to develop improvised scenes. These scenes will culminate in a loosely structured score, inviting dancers to experiment with both movement and voice as they react, respond, and lead within the group dynamic.

Designed for professional dancers eager to delve into NVA & Guests’ innovative approach, this workshop offers a chance to immerse yourself in the company’s creative process beyond the typical classroom setting. It warmly welcomes those with little to no experience in text work.

End of Day Artist Chat

Each day concludes with a brief Artist Chat, providing participants an opportunity to reflect on the day’s work, share their thoughts, and connect with others. This informal discussion also allows dancers to ask questions about the collaborators, the company’s past and upcoming productions, future opportunities, shows, and more.
